What Do You Want Different in 6 Months?

My favorite fitness videos are the transformation ones. In about 30 seconds, you watch someone change completely. They stitch together photos taken over weeks and months, and at the end you see the final result, the kind that makes you smile.

What's fun is how fast the change happens. You're not there for every workout, every hungry restless night, every day they felt beat up and defeated. You just see the result and scroll on to the next video.

We can pull off the same thing in our organizations when something needs to change.

Maybe you don't need to lose a few pounds, but something isn't working, and you haven't been able to dig in and make the adjustment. The temptation is to keep scrolling, chase a new trend, or ignore the problem altogether. But if you lock in and stay the course, you can have that same radical transformation in six months.

That's the power of picking one goal and pointing all your time, energy, and resources at it. The question is simple: what is the one thing that should be different six months from now?

Dan Sullivan has a concept called "10x is easier than 2x." The idea is that instead of trying to double something, you aim to grow it tenfold, and get far more out of the effort. What I love about it is that it forces you to think bigger. And I believe you can actually get there if you give it real thought.

So ask yourself: what do you want to change in your organization in six months? Then, as a thinking exercise, imagine 10x'ing that area instead of just 2x'ing it.

I usually do this by taking half a day or a full day away from the busyness of work and life. I review the wins from the last six months and plan the next one. You can do it in a quarterly rhythm too, but six months is probably the more natural window for this kind of vision.

Pick your one thing. Then work backward. What needs to happen in five months to make this win happen? Then four months, three months, two months, four weeks, two weeks. Reversing your thinking shows you how quickly you need to move to get started on your transformation.

I created a resource to help you do exactly this for digital and technology goals. You can use it on your own or with your team, every quarter or every six months, in whatever format works for you. Purchase and download the guide.
