Stephen and Mary Lowe have a new book, Biblical Foundations for an Ecology of Digital Ministry, and I want to put it on your radar. I’m a little biased here. Dr. Stephen Lowe was kind enough to write an endorsement for Online Church Is Not the Answer, and over the years I’ve had the privilege of speaking to several of his classes at Liberty University. I’ve learned a lot from both of them, and I eagerly read anything they put out.
What I love about this book is that it starts with the Bible, not the tech. So much of what’s been written about online church comes from people like me defending what we were already doing. The Lowes take a step back and ask what Scripture says about presence, place, and what makes the church the church. They walk through Jesus and the woman at the well, Paul discipling churches by letter, and God’s people being “gathered and scattered” from Israel to Acts to 1 Peter. They even dig into the tougher questions like digital communion and baptism. You might not land exactly where they land on everything, but you’ll come away thinking more clearly.
If you lead anything digital at your church, or you’re still not sure online ministry counts as “real” ministry, grab a copy. It’s a thoughtful, encouraging read, and I think it’ll help many church leaders.
